Take the chance to experience both capercaillie and black grouse courtship! Our package contains 2 overnight sessions in the capercaillie hide and 1 session at the black grouse hide. This is the full monty for experiencing these rites of spring. Birding at its best. Full long week end birding experience of the Nordic henbirds most magnificient courtships in southern Sweden, This is our ultimate combo package for bird lovers in April.

You start of with two following over night stays at the capercaillie hide out in the forest. Before entering the hide you get useful facts about the bird, habitats and the code of conducts needed during the activity. Highly exited and expectant you wander into the forest with our guide to enter the hides, where you spend the evening and night in complete silence.

It takes time, absolute silence and patience to witness this courting. The capercaillie is extremely watchful and as participant you have to show consideration and responsibility not to disturb. It is important to know that watching or photographing capercaillies involves great patience and all sessions are not sucessful due to bad weather or natural causes.

The courtship takes place during early morning and goes on during forenoon. As the males comes in to the courtship area early in the evening before you will be waiting in complete silence during the evening and night while staying overnight in the hide. During the evening you will hear the males advancing the courtship area in the surrounding trees while making some of their typical sounds.

All the precautions are well worth and something to enjoy when you in the morning are able to see and hear the males magnificient display. If the hens arrive fighting will intensify. Around noon day 2 you leave the arena and go for lunch and mid day rest. In the afternoon you return to the hides for yet another overnight stay followed by early morning courtship. One stay at the arena is never the same as the one before.

Around noon day 3 you leave the arena and go for lunch and head of to our companions. Here you will stay in a cabin and sleep in a bed. In the evening you will enjoy a dinner and will get information from our guide for the black grouse courtship. In the middle of the night you rise up for a quick breakfast and hot drinks as we in good time before the sunrise head for the black grouse courtship arena.

In the darkness just before dawn the calls of the black grouse starts. As the sun light stands emerges the black grouse like ghosts out in the marsh. Calling intensifies and so does the dance. Will there come any hens or will the courtship be attacked by a goshawk maybe? During the early morning hours a lot can happen. Around noon day 4 the activity finishes.

Customer has to book one week in advance before starting date, for example 7 Days Before the 8th of April. Food and drinks included. Warm sleeping bag and blankets included. 3 overnight stays in the hides and 2 day stays for refreshing, sleeping or charging batteries at our partners cabins included. Additional nights/mornings in at the hides is possible to book. As well as overnight stays at our partners cabins (500 kr/person/night). The guide accompanies you during the whole experience.

Capercaillie lekk in Tiveden Sweden - 3 Days/2 sessions

In the old forests the ancient courtship of the capercaillie takes place. It is a unique display of this our biggest forest hens courting rites which includes patience and also great action. Dancing, odd sounds and fights during the early Scandinavian morning. The most magnificient and mystic courtship ceremony among the forest hens. It takes time, absolute silence and patience to witness this courting. The capercaillie is extremely watchful and as participant you have to show consideration and responsibility not to disturb the birds or other guests..

The courtship takes place during early morning and goes on during forenoon. As the males comes in to the courtship area early in the evening before you will be waiting in complete silence during the evening and night while staying overnight in the hide. You will get information about the capercaillie, living conditions and habitat as well as which precautions you have to take during the activity. Coffee, tea and food included (there are veg alternative of course). Warm sleeping bag and blankets included. Over day rest at accomodation included.

Time: 2 overnight stays at the hide, 2x20hrs
Start: 15:00/16:00 until 12:00 the day after. You meet up the afternoon before for info and we head out to the hides in the evening to experience the lekk in the early morning to follow

Black grouse lekk in Tiveden Sweden - 1 sessions/2 days

Far out in the wilderness in the marsh the black grouses gather dressed to kill for courtships in dances and fights. Like ghosts the either appear or fly in by dusk. Who will be the one whom the hens finds most fit? Or will a goose hawk come and strike?

Before sun rise we head out to the marsh to watch the courtship of the black grouse. After the sun rise the males appear like ghosts dressed to kill among the tufts and hollows. The characteristic courtship song is the only thing breaking the morning silence. The dancing will commence and can be so wild that feathers be flying.
The black grouses may have been playing at this site for centuries. Everything can happen during the courtship - who will be the one succeeding the others? Or will there come a goshawk and try to prey one of the males?

The black grouse is also very watchful and great carefulness is needed as well as silence, to show regard. The excitement during the play is great and the courtship environment in the marsh is very scenic. Included is information about the black grouse, their living conditions and habitat as well as which precautions and regard to be taken during the activity. We travel and walk to the hide by the courtship grounds in good time before the sun rises. In the mystical darkness we sneak out in the shining of our head lamps. Our hides are customized for photographing and you have the possibilities for taking photos from a low position. Frontlit birds.

Owl safari in Tiveden Sweden

During the evening we will make a stop and make a fire to have a meal and drink coffee, tea or hot coco. There you will also learn more about the owls, their habitats and myths. Binoculars are included. All transports during the safari is included.
